|Founded in 1939 as a registered employers' trade union, the Shipping Association of Jamaica (SAJ) represents 78 companies in the private sector of the island's shipping industry, and stands ready to forge additional alliances with key partners in the international industry. Membership includes shipping agents, wharf owners, terminal operators and stevedoring companies; together with ship owners and operators.
The Shipping Association manages the supply of labour at Port Bustamante. The SAJ deals with all matters affecting the interest of its membership including industrial relations, security and training and also liaises with government and other trade bodies. The total workforce now stands at close to 400 and an ongoing recruitment exercise is in place to satisfy the demand for labour.
Port Computer Services is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the SAJ. From well-equipped headquarters, the Shipping Association of Jamaica operates the Secretariat of the Caribbean Shipping Association (CSA), an international body with members representing the Caribbean, Latin America, the United States and Europe.
